Understanding OpenRTB

What the OpenRTB standard is, how it shaped programmatic advertising, and what its auction model means for buyers of inbound calls.

Open Real-Time Bidding (OpenRTB) is a standardized protocol that enables programmatic ad buying in real time. It facilitates automated transactions between buyers (advertisers) and sellers (publishers) through a structured framework designed for efficiency, transparency, and scalability. Developed by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), OpenRTB has become the backbone of programmatic advertising, allowing digital ads to be bought and sold in milliseconds through ad exchanges and supply-side platforms (SSPs).

How OpenRTB Changed Display and Native Advertising

Before OpenRTB, digital advertising was largely a manual and fragmented process. Advertisers had to negotiate directly with publishers, leading to inefficiencies and high operational costs. With the introduction of OpenRTB, the advertising ecosystem changed significantly:

  • Automation and Efficiency – OpenRTB greatly reduced the need for manual negotiations by enabling automated auctions where ad inventory is bought and sold in real time.
  • Increased Transparency – Advertisers gained greater visibility into where their ads were being placed, reducing fraud and improving targeting accuracy.
  • Enhanced Targeting Capabilities – With access to real-time data, advertisers could bid on impressions based on user behavior, demographics, and contextual relevance, aiming for higher engagement rates.
  • Global Standardization – By providing a unified protocol, OpenRTB streamlined the buying and selling process across different platforms and ad exchanges, creating a more cohesive ecosystem.
  • Cost Optimization – Advertisers could bid dynamically, helping them pay the right price for each impression rather than overpaying for broad, untargeted ad placements.

The Impact of OpenRTB on the Digital Advertising Ecosystem

The adoption of OpenRTB has fundamentally changed how digital ads are bought and sold, benefiting both advertisers and publishers.

  • For Advertisers: OpenRTB allows for more precise audience targeting, leading to better return on ad spend (ROAS). Advertisers can leverage real-time data and artificial intelligence to make bidding decisions that maximize engagement and conversions.
  • For Publishers: OpenRTB has expanded monetization opportunities by giving publishers access to a larger pool of advertisers competing for their inventory, driving up CPM rates.
  • For Consumers: More relevant ads mean a better user experience. Programmatic buying can reduce ad fatigue by showing users ads more aligned with their interests.

The Future of OpenRTB in Digital Advertising

As the digital advertising industry continues to evolve, OpenRTB remains a crucial component in the programmatic ecosystem. Future advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence will further refine targeting and bidding strategies, improving efficiency and effectiveness for all stakeholders. Additionally, as privacy regulations shift, OpenRTB is adapting to help industry participants meet data protection laws while maintaining the advantages of real-time programmatic transactions.

OpenRTB has cemented itself as the industry standard for digital advertising, and its influence will only grow as more advertisers and publishers leverage its capabilities to optimize their ad campaigns in an increasingly programmatic world.

The same principles now apply to inbound phone calls, where call platforms ping buyers with details about each call before it is delivered. CallCompute is buyer-side software. We don't sell, route or broker calls. It plays the bidder's role in that exchange for companies that buy calls, much as a DSP does for display advertisers.
